Controlling Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is why you always see so much pink around this time of year.  During October, breast cancer organizations use the color pink to raise awareness for the disease and remind the public about early detection, causes, diagnosis, treatment, and support for survivors.  According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women (excluding cancers of the skin), accounting for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed in U.S. women.  This is why it is so important to pay attention to early warning signs and receive annual clinical breast exams and mammograms after the age of 40 (sometimes earlier depending on health and family history).

With statistics from the National Cancer Institute showing one in eight women being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and more than 30% diagnosed after the cancer has spread beyond the localized stage, early detection is critical.  Even more important is the adoption of a preventative plan that can keep you from becoming a statistic.

While breast cancer is not completely preventable due to factors such as age, family history, early menarche, and late menopause that are not adjustable, there are several risk factors associated with the disease that you can modify.  Factors associated with postmenopausal obesity, alcohol consumption (two drinks per day can increase cancer risk by 21%) and physical inactivity are under your control.

The American Cancer Society recommends taking the following steps to help prevent the onset of breast cancer. Maintain a healthy weight throughout life, balancing caloric intake with physical activity; adopt a physically active lifestyle, engaging in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity five days per week; eat a healthy diet with an emphasis on plant sources; and limit your intake of alcoholic beverages.

As you strive to achieve maximum health, the spa will continue to support your goal to achieve whole-body wellness through a multitude of relaxing treatments for mind, body, and soul.

To donate to a local organization to help defeat breast cancer, we highly recommend the Brem Foundation

Fall is here, but it doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your summer glow.  There are plenty of ways to keep that bronzed look throughout fall and winter, sans the sun.

Facial bronzers are great for face and body (think neck, shoulders and décolletage), but watch out for any that will make you appear orange or sparkly.  The goal is to provide a subtle, bronzed effect that's matte or with a bit of shimmer.

If you have oily skin, try dusting a powder bronzer on the areas of your face that the sun would naturally hit.  Don’t always rely on the applicator that comes with the powder; you’ll need to arm yourself with a big, fluffy brush in order to achieve that smooth, even glow.

Dry skin?  Go with a cream bronzer and mix it in with your moisturizer/sunscreen or apply it directly to temples, bridge of nose and cheeks.

Don’t be shy about asking for help from a professional, either. Makeup artists at the spa can walk you through how to choose the right color for your skin tone as well as the correct way to apply the product.  When in doubt, remember that less is more!
When you’re ready for an all-over sunless tan, save yourself time, stress and orange palms by visiting a pro.  Luckily, there are several options for sunless tanning available, and each can begin with a relaxing trip to the spa that starts with an exfoliation to prep skin for your all-over tan.

Tanning lotion application – In this treatment, a therapist meticulously applies sunless tanning lotion by hand to help you achieve an even and natural-looking tan.

Sunless tanning booth application – Here, you enter a booth that quickly sprays you from every angle with sunless tanner and moisturizers, making quick work of tanning.

Airbrush tanning – With airbrush tanning, your therapist uses a handheld airbrush to precisely and evenly apply a light misting of sunless tanning lotion, often highlighting specific parts of your body such as abdominals.

Whether you’re sporting a tan for a special event, vacation, or year round, the above options are your safest bet for avoiding the harmful—and aging—effects of extended sun exposure or tanning bed usage, and they are available any time of the year, rain or shine!

Reserve a consultation to help you look your very best!

Q: My lips get so dry this time of year. What do you recommend?

A: At the end of every facial here at Jacqueline Morgan, we apply Q-tica lip balm. This extremely nourishing lip balm is great maintenance for healthy lips or serious repair for lips that go beyond chapped - QTICA Intense Lip Repair provides both. The rich, thick concentration of honey, beeswax, vitamins (including retinols), aloe, tea tree and essential oils defends against the elements and helps relieve and seal the most dry, irritated lips overnight. See an instant improvement! Apply daily before applying lipstick for longer-wearing color or just by itself!
