Christmas time is always so special here at Jacqueline Morgan Day Spa. For me, it is by far my most favorite time of the year. I was reading a story the other day about a Mother who was asked by her very inquisitive child if she was in fact, Santa. Her reply was one that I found very powerful and I myself had not recognized until now. In a nutshell, this what she said:

“The answer is no. I am not Santa. I am the person who fills your stockings with presents, though. I also choose and wrap the presents under the tree, the same way my mom did for me, and the same way her mom did for her. (And yes, Daddy helps, too.) I imagine you will someday do this for your children, and I know you will love seeing them run down the stairs on Christmas morning. You will love seeing them sit under the tree, their small faces lit with Christmas lights. This won’t make you Santa, though. Santa is bigger than any person, and his work has gone on longer than any of us have lived. What he does is simple, but it is powerful. He teaches children how to have belief in something they can’t see or touch”.

Wow! In so many ways; what a powerful message! Not only in faith, but in hope and love as well.

5 Tips for Surviving Holiday Party Season

We all love to celebrate the holidays, especially when we’re invited to numerous parties by co-workers, relatives, friends and neighbors. Unfortunately, a couple of months of celebratory eating and drinking can undo all the work you’ve done to fit into your party dress. The trick is to come away from the holidays looking and feeling just as good—or better—than before the season started. By following a few simple steps you’ll be able to have your party cake, and eat it, too.

1. LBD Selection. A little black dress is a must for every woman’s wardrobe. Choosing one that can fit in at many different events over several years is easy if you know what to look for. Avoid trendy dresses that will go out of fashion in a couple of seasons; opt for more classic cuts and subtle fabrics that will last for years. Choose a style that flatters your body shape, whether that means a pencil skirt, a full skirt, a V-neck, etc. Avoid styles that you’re unlikely to wear in a few years or that aren’t as versatile, such as super-short dresses and strapless tops. Above all, choose a dress that makes you feel great; if it doesn’t, it will spend more time in your closet than out on the dance floor.

2. Pre-Party Skin Prep. Once you have your dress, you’ll want to make sure that your skin is looking its best when all of the cameras inevitably come out. A quick trip to the spa will get you party ready with a clarifying facial, body scrub and wrap. Remember to keep your skin moisturized throughout the season, paying special attention to hands and feet. Moisturizing manicures and pedicures with the addition of paraffin treatments go a long way in warding off dry, winter skin.

3. Eat First, Snack Less. It’s easy to find yourself overeating at a holiday party if you arrive hungry. Save yourself the empty calories by eating a healthy snack—or even dinner—before you leave the house. If you’re going to a potluck, be the person who brings a salad or fruit plate. If you must eat at the party, use small plates; fill up on vegetables; avoid dips and fried foods; and limit your desserts. Focus on socializing, not on hanging around the food table, and don’t feel guilty about saying no to a second helping.

4. Drink Moderately. Holiday parties are a festive atmosphere, usually with plenty of wine and spirits flowing freely. While it can be tempting to imbibe with reckless abandon when among friends and family, you usually feel a whole lot better in the morning if you monitor your alcohol intake—for both caloric and hangover reasons. If you’re watching calories, stay away from popular holiday drinks such as eggnog, hot buttered rum and white Russians. Stick with one to two glasses of wine or light beer and calorie-free beverages.


5. Stay Safe. It can’t be said enough that safety should be priority No. 1 year round, and especially around the holidays when so many people are traveling, celebrating and drinking more than usual. Always leave the house with a back-up plan in the event that you have too much to drink, whether it’s a designated driver, the number to a cab company, or a standing reservation on a friend’s couch.



6 Easy New Year's Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are so last year! How many people do you know who make the same resolutions every year only to be disappointed? Instead, let’s make some resolutions that are super easy to keep and inspire others around you to rethink their own.

1. Smile More. Do more things that make you happy, whether it’s traveling, going for a monthly massage, having lunch with your friends, calling your mom, playing with your kids, horseback riding, or reading in the park on your lunch breaks. The point is to be more spontaneous with your time and enjoy life.

2. Make Your Own Diet Decisions. Start listening to your body and feeding it what it needs and wants. Drink more water, eat more vegetables, eat less meat, make more food at home. You’ll often find that when you stop focusing on losing weight and concentrate more on eating whole, natural foods, the weight will come off naturally.

3. Take More Naps. Research has shown that midday naps increase productivity and alertness. A 20- to 30-minute nap is ideal around 2:00 p.m. Just don’t forget to set an alarm!

4. Start Moving. Too many people think that they have to join a gym or boot camp on January 1st for a New Year’s resolution to count. Simply parking further away, choosing the stairs over the elevator, and taking an after-dinner stroll are plenty to get your body moving if you’ve been sedentary for the past year.

5. Leave the Electronics at The Door. When was the last time you made it through a dinner without checking your cell phone? Discover how good you can make someone feel by turning off interruptions and giving them your complete attention. Treat yourself to the same thrill by powering down the phone for some quality “me time”.

6. Look Younger than Your Age. In addition to the high you get from accomplishing the above resolutions, regularly scheduled facials with your favorite esthetician will help boost your healthy glow and keep skin looking supple and youthful.
